New social tricks for an old Dogg

Snoop Dogg is at it again – he’s doing a complete end-run on Groupon.com and their imitators:

In this Facebook-exclusive ‘Deal of the Day’ promotion, a different product is featured each day. If it gets 100 likes, people buying it will get 10% off the stated price. If it reaches 200 likes, they will get 20% off, and 300 likes will get people 30% off. Big discounts for Snoop-approved products, and with his 10 million Facebook fans, it should be easy for them to reach 300 likes. Dotbox, the e-commerce, social media marketing company behind the idea believes the promotion is a first for the industry.

This seems like a genius idea for a promotion, group buying that cuts out the middleman’s cut. It would be interesting to know if a promotion along these lines could work for museums or cultural institutions, perhaps a discount on admission or membership? The implied recommendation of people you know should be quite powerful.

OK, who’s going to try it? If you aren’t, why not?
